I launched The Annotations Magazine as a place to practice writing, share my views and favourite products, build an audience, and connect with a like-minded community.
But here I am, trying to write a piece on face serums, thinking:
‘What would I even title this?’
Top Five Hydrating Serums to Grab While the World Is Literally Burning!
Great. What a treat to read.
I’m not pretending to be holier than thou. I genuinely believe that sugary content cuts through political noise, and offers some much-needed escapism - or at the very least, a moment of relief - even if it’s surface-level.
But still, I ask myself: Who am I in all of this?
What’s my role, my purpose, my reason for taking up space?
We already have skincare articles. We already have book reviews. We definitely already have political commentary. So where do I sit?
I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe I’m not a provider, but a curator. Not a lecturer, but a participant. I’m not standing above the conversation - I’m in it, Chai in hand, chatting with everyone else.
So, if you see an article on women’s rights, followed by a guide to choosing the best enemies-to-lovers romance, you’ll understand why. I’m not here to be an expert. I’m here to chat. To share. To listen. To spark something.
With love,
E
